Nam June Paik`s Story
ir text

The opening exhibition of the Nam June Paik Memorial House, “Tomorrow, The World Will Be Beautiful”, follows the memories and imaginative journey of Nam June Paik, who returned to Korea in 1984 after over 30 years abroad. The exhibition is divided into 4 parts including “Nam June Paik`s Story”, “Nam June Paik Virtual Museum”, “Nam June Paik`s Room”, and “Homage to Nam June Paik”, all of which will become permanent exhibitions of the memorial house. It begins in 1984 and unveils Nam June Paik`s lifetime in non-sequential order, regardless of time period.

Part 1 is a 10-part notebook of Nam June Paik`s main memories and compiles the relevant sources of those memories through materials and sculptures. Strictly speaking, the notebook is not a work of reason, such as an official record or academic research, but a creative and aesthetic record that reads between the lines and follows Nam June Paik`s thoughts by linking his words, writings, and works, as well as reminiscences from his friends.

After Part 1, Part 2 is a multi-screen panel station that is designed based on Nam June Paik`s Fluxus period. After the idle screen that is part of this exhibition, the audience will be able to freely explore Nam June Paik`s lifetime and related materials using the interactive screen. Part 3 is a complex installation that connects the beginning and the end of Nam June Paik`s life. Part 4 consists of sculptures that are scattered around the courtyard and interior of the memorial house, starting from the entrance like a game that invites the audience to spot-the-difference between various objects. It serves as a diorama that unravels Nam June Paik`s train of thought or philosophy in the form of sculptures. They become symbols that guide the audience through the space using light, basic shapes like triangles, squares and circles, scan lines, stripes of colors, and pixels, which were Nam June Paik`s main media of expression.

“Tomorrow, The World Will Be Beautiful” is a collaborative exhibition between researchers in various fields, artists, and planners, and will become the opening exhibition of the Nam June Paik Memorial House. It is also the first record of the house’s permanent exhibitions, including “Nam June Paik`s Story”, “Nam June Paik Virtual Museum”, “Nam June Paik`s Room”, and “Homage to Nam June Paik”.
