Bongeunsa Temple
Located to the north of the Korea Convention & Exhibition Center (COEX), Bongeunsa Temple was originally founded in 794 AD by Yeonhoe Guksa during the 10th year of King Wonseong’s reign in Silla, and was originally known as Gyeongseongsa Temple. In 1498, Queen Jeonghyeon, the second wife of King Seongjong, oversaw major renovations and relocated the temple to its current site on the east side of King Seongjong's tomb (Seolleung), and renamed it Bongeunsa. Originally located about 1 km southwest of Seolleung, the temple was moved during the reign of King Myeongjong of Joseon. The temple hall, which features a signboard inscribed by the renowned scholar Kim Jeong-hui, houses 3,479 woodblocks comprising 13 types of Buddhist scriptures, including the Buddhāvataṃsaka Sutra and Diamond Sutra.
