The artist, who masterfully depicts white porcelain that is not purely white, fills his canvases with slightly tilted forms, cracks in the porcelain, hand-crafted curves, and subtle, shifting hues that change with the angle. Unlike other white porcelain works, Yang Sung-hoon's moon jars reveal a gentle, gradually emerging beauty that deeply resonates with the roots of Korean heritage the more they are viewed. Despite being captured on canvas, the unembellished white moon jars convey the rich aroma of their era. This scent permeates the canvas, allowing viewers to feel a deep sense of nostalgia and discover the true meaning of life.
About the author
Yang Sung-hoon, born in 1967 in Daegu, is a distinguished artist who obtained both his bachelor's and master's degrees in Western Painting from Keimyung University. He has been dedicated to his work in Daegu, but in the early 2000s, he spent some time in Seoul to broaden his artistic perspective through exhibitions and projects.
While in Seoul, he was deeply inspired by a National Treasure-grade white porcelain moon jar at the National Museum of Korea. This experience led him to capture the subtle and profound beauty of unadorned white porcelain on canvas. His paintings of porcelain convey a true aesthetic, revealing the essence of life through the memories and traces of time that have become ingrained over centuries.
Yang's work has been featured in 28 solo exhibitions and over 200 group exhibitions and art fairs, both in Korea, including Seoul and Daegu, and internationally.
